Many people come to the Snake Valley Astronomical Association Camps for the dark sky and the experience of observing from our dark site. Therefore, restrictionsexist on the type of light that can be used after twilight when observers are viewing. White Lights are to be turned off after Twilight No white light torches are to be used on or near the observing field. Red led torches or weaker torches such as 2 AA or 2 AAA battery ones may be acceptable ifthe lens is covered with red cellophane.
People driving into or out of the site after dark should do so with their headlights off and only parker's on please. Car interior and boot/tailgate lights should also beturned off or disabled to prevent them from coming on. All people staying at the camp need to be mindful of the need to limit extraneous light. Eg: keeping camp building doors closed after twilight. Laptop computers can throw out a lot of light glow from their screens. Please keep screens covered and out of view of other observers please.
General Observing Field Etiquette Here are a few general pointers to ensure that everybody enjoys themselves. People come to the Astro Camp for varying reasons. Some wish to check out as much equipment as possible, whilst others wish to make the most of theDark Sky that is available at the camp for some quality observing time. If someone is busy observing please wait till they move from the eyepiece/computer screen before interruptinghim or her.
Never touch/use anyone else's equipment without an invitation from the owner.
If someone is kind enough to loan you a piece of equipment, do not on-loan to a 3rd party without the owners knowledge and consent. Parents, please keep Children under supervision and control when on the observing field, forecourt or anywhere else equipment is erected. Please instruct children they canlook through telescopes only when invited to, but never touch.
Ladies (or gentlemen where applicable), please do not wear makeup (especially mascara) if you wish to view through other peoples equipment. Such makeup can leave agreasy smudge on the eyepiece optics and can be difficult to remove.
